Tennis News: Appearing for the tenth time at the final Grand Slam of the season, the US Open, Jessica Pegula cruised into the second round after a convincing straight sets win.
The home favorite showed a world-class performance when she crushed Romanian tennis player Elena Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the 2026 US Open season.
From the start, the third seed appeared aggressive when returning Gabriela Ruse’s serve. It was only a matter of time until he managed to break the Romanian tennis player’s serve. He himself was perfect with his serve after only facing one break point opportunity, but beating the Romanian’s serve proved to be a tougher challenge.
“In my opinion, both the first and second serves were done very well,” commented Pegula about Gabriela Ruse.
“Sometimes, serving at less than optimal speed can actually be more difficult than a fast first serve. As a tennis player who is good at returning serves, I usually anticipate the ball coming at high speed and can take advantage of it, in fact, the harder my opponent’s serve, the faster the ball will return to them.”
“However, if the opponent deliberately changes the tempo or speed of the serve — especially when I have prepared to anticipate a certain type of serve — it is more difficult to return the ball well.”
“He was very clever in varying the placement of his second serve. Even though I was usually aggressive when returning the second serve, he managed to hit the ball deep into the back area and make me go wrong or not move freely. As a result, I didn’t gain much from my opponent’s service errors (such as double fouls) until towards the end of the second set.”
“In my opinion, my return of serve is actually still quite good, but as a player who relies on aggressive play, sometimes my opponent’s strategy of changing the speed of the ball slightly limits my options in counterattacking.”
The only thing that is certain in Pegula’s next match is that the second round of the US Open will be a duel between American players, both of whom are Grand Slam champions. What is not yet known is who he will face.
The third seed will play against 2020 Australian Open champion Kenin for the seventh time and he leads 4-2 in their head to head.
Meanwhile, Pegula has never competed against Williams. However, the meeting will be very interesting because the tennis player who has seven Grand Slam singles titles will come away with his first singles win in more than a season if he manages to beat Kenin.
In the same draw, the 31st seed, Leylah Annie Fernandez, also put on a stunning performance when she defeated Chinese tennis player, Zhang Shuai, 6-3, 6-2. Advancing to the second round of the US Open, he will meet Hungarian tennis player Panna Udvardy or Thai tennis player Mananchaya Sawangkaew.
