Tennis News: Ignacio Buse notched another milestone in the best season of his career to date at the Winston-Salem Open, by advancing to the final of his second ATP tournament of the 2026 season.
The 22 year old tennis player defeated French tennis player Benjamin Bonzi 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the semifinals of the Winston-Salem Open which lasted 1 hour 51 minutes. Thanks to this victory, he became the first Peruvian tennis player to reach the final of an ATP tournament on hard-courts since Luis Horna on Long Island in the 2004 season.
Despite losing the second set after leading 4-2, the 36th ranked tennis player managed to regain control in the third set — where he didn’t drop a single point on his first serve — and cruised to victory. He ended the match by successfully converting seven of the 15 break point opportunities he created.
“I started playing with good form in the second set, but then I felt a little anxious. I think that’s normal. The way I recovered in the third set was very important and the key,” admitted Buse.
In the final of the Winston-Salem Open, third seed Buse will face British tennis player Arthur Fery with the target of winning the first ATP tournament title in his career at the ATP level 500 tournament, the Hamburg Open, by defeating American tennis player Tommy Paul in the title match.
In the other semifinal of the Winston-Salem Open, fourth seed Fery advanced to the final of an ATP tournament for the first time in his career after his opponent from Australia, James Duckworth decided to withdraw due to injury after losing the first set.
The 2026 Wimbledon semifinalists were in full control with a 6-4, 2-1 lead when Duckworth — who had taken a medical break after the opening set — was unable to continue after 59 minutes and walked to the net to shake hands with the fourth seed.
“I am very happy to be able to advance to the final,” said Fery, who became the first British tennis player to reach the final of an ATP level 250 tournament.
“This is not at all the way I wanted the match to end. I hope James recovers quickly and can rest in preparation for next week. However, I am very happy to have qualified.”
Now, Fery is determined to complete this already special season, as he seeks the first ATP tournament title of his career. Earlier this season, the 24 year old tennis player managed to reach the Wimbledon semifinals. Thanks to his victory in the semifinals of the Winston-Salem Open, his ranking rose to the highest ranking in his career to date, namely 33rd, while displacing Cameron Norrie as the British number one tennis player. Eight weeks ago, he was still outside the top 100.
