European Basketball News: Bad news for Barcelona Basketball comes from Gdansk. Olek Balcerowski, one of the new faces in Barça’s squad for next season, suffered a physical problem in the World Cup qualifying match that took place this Sunday between Poland and Germany—a match that ended in a narrow 94-96 victory for Álex Mumbru’s team, the defending World Cup champions.
Olek Balcerowski played for more than 12 minutes in a sluggish first half, recording four points and three rebounds, before being involved in an incident so unlucky it almost felt absurd.
Barça’s new center player chased a wild ball that rolled towards the touchline. Balcerowski jumped at the ball, and while trying to save it, he crashed into a row of VIP chairs in the pavilion area which is very close to the pitch.
At first glance, the sight looked spectacular: a player over 2.10 meters tall was seen ‘floating’ above the most exclusive seats in the arena.
But in reality, Balcerowski hit his right shin; He lay on the field for some time because of the pain caused by the impact. The player from Poland then hobbled to the bench to continue medical treatment, while showing signs of pain and compressing the injured area with ice.
The impact was clearly hard and painful, but it was still just an impact. The situation becomes more worrying because the Polish coach, Igor Milicic, can no longer rely on him for the remaining matches. The match itself was finally decided in extra time through two free throws from Dennis Schroder.
It remains to be seen whether the Polish Basketball Federation and its medical team will provide further information regarding Balcerowski’s physical condition, or whether we will have to wait for the *center* player to arrive in Barcelona to find out the severity of the injury.
