Kai Sotto stole attention again with his stunning performance with the Philippine national team in the 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers – Asia zone. However, the biggest highlight came from Philippines head coach Tim Cone. In the post-match press conference, Cone revealed his plans to speak with Miami Heat management to open up opportunities for Sotto.
Sotto put on an impressive performance by scoring 13 points, 16 rebounds and 3 assists in 32 minutes of play, helping the Philippines beat Iran 68-56. This victory boosted their record to 4-4 in Group E of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers – Asia zone.
At club level, Kai Sotto currently has the status of a free transfer player. His contract with Koshigaya Alphas in Japan expires after the 2025-2026 season, and since May, he has been on the B.League’s free transfer list. Until now, there has been no news regarding a new club that will recruit him.
Last season with Koshigaya, Sotto put up a solid performance, averaging 13.1 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 28 B.League games. The shooting percentage from the field reached 52.0 percent, showing the high efficiency of the young player.
In a live FIBA broadcast, Tim Cone openly stated to Sotto his intention to talk to the Miami Heat about the opportunity to play in the NBA. “I still think you need to get in the NBA. Find a way. I’ll talk to Miami. See what I can do? Are you willing?” said Tim Cone.
Tim Cone’s connection to the Miami Heat is nothing new. Previously, he served as a guest assistant coach for the 2022 NBA Summer League. His relationship with Erik Spoelstra, the Heat’s head coach, further strengthens this possibility. (tor)
