Premier League News: Roberto De Zerbi defended Tottenham’s most expensive signing this summer, midfielder Sandro Tonali after experiencing a night to forget after suffering a 2-0 home defeat to his former club, Newcastle on matchday 2 of the Premier League which took place on Saturday (29/08) evening.
Sandro Tonali was rested for Tottenham’s 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup so he can improve his physical condition after a disappointing performance in his debut match at Brentford last weekend.
But he struggled to prove himself on a day where his every touch was booed by Newcastle fans, who sang songs about the Italian and cheered when he was substituted in the 75th minute, shortly after he had a hand in Anthony Elanga’s opener.
“No, I love Sandro Tonali, today is a day where my emotions for my players are greater than the previous day because we are building a club together. Vinai (Venkatesham), Johan Lange, the owners, me and them (the players) are like our children,” said De Zerbi as quoted by ESPN UK.
“So today is very sad, we are all very disappointed with this defeat, but I love my players more today than in the next win we will achieve.
“I believe in our project more than just the game against Brentford; I believe in our players. I think (Omar) Marmoush played very well in his first game.
“It was the first game for Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro; they joined late but are crucial for the team – especially after the World Cup and after two injuries.
“Sandro Tonali is also another important player. However, his condition is not yet in prime condition—perhaps physically, he is not yet at his best.”
