Dallas Mavericks evaluation of Kyrie Irving January 2027

The Dallas Mavericks are adamant about keeping Kyrie Irving all summer even though many teams are interested. However, this strategy seems temporary. The team plans to let Irving rebuild his trade value before making the next move ahead of the trade deadline.

Irving is set to return after missing more than a year with an ACL injury. While the Mavericks retained the veteran star last summer, reports suggest they may trade him in February to align their schedule with 19-year-old Cooper Flagg.

The Mavericks’ rejection of multiple offers indicates their intent to see Irving through January. Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports reports that the Mavericks will monitor Irving’s performance after returning from injury, before deciding on his next move in the transfer market.

Irving’s market scenario is complicated. This player has not played since his injury in March 2025 and is entitled to US$40 million this season, with a player option worth US$42 million for the 2027-2028 season. One Western Conference executive stated that if Irving returns to All-Star form, many teams would be interested in trading for him, although his injury history limits the possibility to just one first-round pick.

Irving last appeared on the court on March 3, 2025, against the Sacramento Kings. The injury will keep him out of action for the entire 2025-2026 season, and the Mavericks announced in February that he would not return, allowing time to focus on his post-surgery recovery.

Prior to his injury, Irving’s performance remained at an All-Star level, averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists during the 2024-2025 season. The Mavericks’ strategy is clear: get Irving back to health, let him prove his worth, and reconsider transfer options in January.
