Basketball News: Victor Wembanyama really enjoyed his return to the French national team, so much so that he felt the separation this time was harder than he imagined.
While speaking to French newspapers “L’Équipe” and AFP following France’s 84-69 away win over Sweden, the San Antonio Spurs star recalled his first international appearance since the Paris Olympics and how he felt when he had to say goodbye to his teammates.
“Yes, there is a lot of frustration. I didn’t expect to feel this frustrated, but seeing colleagues I’ve known for a long time again feels really good. It would be strange not to be with them anymore,” said Victor Wembanyama.
“It’s been a long time since I last played for France. My role was different then. Believe it or not, I think I’ve matured a lot since then. I came back with a more appreciative attitude towards positive things.”
The experience gave him fond memories, both on and off the field.
“It feels great. I’m progressing in many aspects. It’s allowed me to spend quite a lot of time in France and Europe, so it’s been really nice. We have a great team; it doesn’t get any better than this. And so has the coaching staff. It’s going to be a great memory.”
France had to fight hard to achieve victory in Sweden; they had difficulty making three-point shots and had recorded statistics of only 3 successes from 26 attempts at one point in the match. When asked about the accuracy of the shot, Wembanyama initially responded in a humorous tone.
“Bad shooting accuracy, yes, but my own record is 1 out of 1,” he said with a laugh.
He then admitted that he was partly responsible for the team’s difficulties in attacking.
“I think that shows how young our team is and that we are still trying to find the right pattern of play. There was a bit of confusion about what we were doing, and some of that was my fault, because I took certain actions without telling my teammates or putting them in the best position.”
“We had a discussion during the first half break, and things improved. This is just the beginning. They are players who are usually good at scoring points, but today their accuracy was not good. Things like that can happen, and in the future things will definitely improve.”
