European Basketball News: A surprising move occurred in the technical ranks of Barcelona Basketball. The club is well advanced in the process of recruiting new forwards, although they already have Joel Parra as well as players who only joined this summer—such as Tyrese Martin, Stanley Umude and Agus Ubal—who can also play in the ‘3’ position.
As revealed by RAC1 journalist Dani Aguila and confirmed by this newspaper, Barça are close to completing the recruitment of Justin Minaya. The forward from the United States, who also holds Dominican citizenship, will soon arrive in Palau to become the eleventh recruit for the 26/27 season.
Minaya, who is 27 years old and 1.96 meters tall, last season played in the G League, specifically with the Osceola Magic. During the last regular season, he averaged 9.1 points and 4.1 *rebounds* per game with the team from Florida.
Minaya has ‘Cotonou’ status thanks to his Dominican citizenship; this status allows him not to occupy the quota of non-EU players in ACB competitions.
Currently, Tyrese Martin and Justin Robinson are the two players who will fill this position, so Aleksander Sekulic does not need to drop players as happened last season with Myles Cale, Miles Norris and Will Clyburn.
Once his move to Barcelona is officially confirmed, Minaya will have his first experience on the continental basketball scene. Born in Harrington Park, New Jersey, on March 26 1999, this player competed in the NCAA between 2017 and 2022, playing for the University of South Carolina and the University of Providence.
After going unselected in the 2022 NBA draft, he began a journey that initially took him to G League team Mexico City Capitanes, before eventually joining the Portland Trail Blazers. He played in 57 games with the Oregon team, while also playing for their affiliate team in the developmental league (G League). Last summer, he joined the Orlando Magic, but after being released before the competition started, he joined the franchise’s affiliate team in the G League.
