Kevin Durant’s name has once again graced the heated debate about who is the best player between Europe and America. The Houston Rockets star firmly rejected the view that European players are superior, while highlighting that they have a lot to learn from American athletes.

Durant expressed his views regarding the dominance of international stars that are increasingly emerging in the NBA. He emphasized that the rapid development of European players cannot be separated from the great influence of American players. Describing the trend as a natural evolution, Durant acknowledged that global talent has absorbed many lessons from the US basketball icon, while praising the growth of the sport across the globe.

Durant praised the dynamic American style of play and argued that players from Europe adopted many elements from there. “It’s the Americans who are their inspiration. It’s great to see some of them win MVP awards, but who are their role models? Jokic, Porzingis, Shai, all of them were fascinated by Iverson’s style and copied his crossover moves. They tried to play like him and succeeded in their own way,” said Durant.

Taking the example of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Durant highlighted that although Shai is not considered an international player, his journey to the NBA was shaped a lot by the American system. “Where did he get his college education? Where did he play in high school? A lot of factors played a role in getting them to where they are today, and it’s all because of the hard work they put in,” Durant added.

Durant realized that basketball had become a global sport. It is time for international players to stand out in the league. Their presence since the 80s makes it no surprise that some of them are now the best. “However, everything is a form of imitation. Who do you admire and who do you try to imitate on the pitch? That’s how development happens. Who do they imitate? The dream team, the American players. That’s why they learn from us, just as my generation learned from their predecessors,” he explained.

Durant also compared the different developments of Luka Doncic and Michael Jordan because their environments were different. However, when Doncic played in America, he brought American basketball culture to his homeland. “I love seeing Luka dribble like us, and he brings a little bit of American basketball culture to his country, and I like that,” concluded Durant.
