NBA Basketball News
The epic story of the Antetokounmpo brothers on the NBA stage has finally reached its end. Now, only Giannis Antetokounmpo is flying the flag at the Miami Heat, while his older brother, Thanasis, has chosen a different path by returning to his hometown in Greece after six loyal seasons accompanying Giannis at the Milwaukee Bucks.
Thanasis, now 34 years old, decided to leave the bright lights of the NBA to rebuild his career in Europe. He officially joined the Aris Basketball Club in the Greek Basketball League. The club announced Thanasis’ arrival on Tuesday (1/9) local time.
Aris and Thanasis agreed to a two-year contract, with the option to extend for an additional season. Aris becomes Thanasis’ new port in Greece after he last played for Panathinaikos in 2019.
Thanasis’ decision comes shortly after Giannis left Milwaukee, traded to the Miami Heat in a big deal last June. This move closes the chapter on Giannis’ impressive 13-season run with the Bucks.
Thanasis’ move to Aris marked the first time the Antetokounmpo brothers were no longer on the same team. Kostas had already joined Aris, while Alex acted at Promitheas.
Thanasis walked a long road before finding his place in the NBA. He was part of the Bucks when the team won the NBA title in 2021. During his career in the league, Thanasis appeared in 232 games with an average of 2.3 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.
Thanasis’ NBA career was halted due to an Achilles injury in the 2024-2025 season. He returned to the Bucks the following season. Apart from that, Thanasis played twice for the New York Knicks after participating in the 2014 NBA Draft, and spent most of his career with the Westchester Knicks in the NBA G League.
Antetokounmpo’s story in the NBA began when Giannis and Thanasis teamed up at the Bucks. Thanasis joins the Bucks six years after Giannis was drafted No. 15 in the 2014 NBA Draft. In June 2021, they even shared the court with Kostas in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers, a unique moment in NBA history.
