Stan Wawrinka Will Play At 2026 US Open After Unexpected Scenario

Ligaolahraga.com –

Tennis News: Stan Wawrinka will appear at the US Open for the last time in his career before retiring, after receiving a wildcard from the organizers, less than a week after they previously refused to provide the facility.

The tennis player who won the US Open in the 2016 season, initially did not get a wildcard facility because the last two available slots were given to the host tennis player. He has applied for a wildcard and did not take part in the qualifying round. Throughout this season, he has participated in three other Grand Slams thanks to the wildcard facility.

The decision shocked many in the tennis world and raised questions about the current wildcard system, which involves giving one slot each to Australia and France under a reciprocity agreement. The other six slots are determined by the USTA, which believes that priority should be given to the host player. At that time, there was no response from the USTA regarding their decision not to provide direct access to the former champion.

“When I first arrived in New York from a small farming village in Switzerland, everything felt so massive. The city. The noise. The energy. The crowds. The lights,” Wawrinka wrote on Instagram earlier this week.

“But, season by season, New York has slowly become one of my favorite places in the world. It challenges me. It pushes me beyond my limits. It brings out a side of me that few other places can explore.”

“I experienced some of the most emotional moments of my career here. Fierce battles, late-night games, an incredible atmosphere and warm support from the crowd. These are memories that will last forever.”

“Winning the US Open, in the city that never sleeps, will forever be one of the greatest moments of my life.”

The day after this emotional statement, the Swiss tennis player unexpectedly managed to secure a place in the main draw. This opportunity opened after Patrick Kypson withdrew due to injury. Kypson previously earned entry to the home Grand Slam, despite only having played two matches at the ATP tournament (both at Wimbledon) since the first week of May due to injury problems.

The fact that the former world number 3 tennis player only got a wild card after withdrawing at the last moment has indeed attracted attention. Apart from his success in winning the title, he has also progressed to the quarter-finals or further five times at the US Open. He has played 62 matches at the Grand Slam and won 46 of them (74% win rate).

Wawrinka will know who his opponent will be in the first round when the draw is made. The first round of matches will start on Sunday (30/8).
