The Badminton Association of Assam thanked the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and Badminton Association of India (BAI) for selecting Guwahati as the host city for the India Open 2028 tournament.

Speaking to Sports Now, Omar Rashid, Honorary General Secretary of Assam Badminton Association, called it a joint partnership with BAI.

Rashid also thanked BAI and state association President Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also the Chief Minister of Assam, for their role in taking the decision. Meanwhile, Rashid is also part of the Badminton India Executive Board.

“Honorable President Himanta Biswa Sarma asked the BWF President and other Vice Presidents. They agreed to move the India Open 2028 to Guwahati in February,” said Rashid.

“The Assam Badminton Association and BAI will organize this event jointly, under the chairmanship of our president in Guwahati.”

“This is a very big tournament for us in Assam and Guwahati.”

India Open 2028 will be held at BAI’s National Center of Excellence.

BAI’s National Center of Excellence is also located in Guwahati. It is a state-of-the-art facility with modern pitches and high-performance infrastructure. The venue will host the India Open 2028. The BWF World Junior Championships 2025 also took place in Guwahati last year at the Center of Excellence.

“The National Center is here. We hosted it there. Last year, we hosted the World Junior Championships at the same stadium,” he said.

“For the first time, a major tournament will also be present in the North East region, specifically in Assam and Guwahati.”

“I am very happy that Guwahati has been selected to host the India Open.”

Two players from Assam are expected to feature.

Rashid also predicted that two players from Assam would feature in the 2028 India Open.

“Ashmita Chaliha and Isharani Baruah… Of course, they will be considered to play in the Super 750 tournament.”

This tournament is usually held at the IG Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. On Sunday, BAI secretary Sanjay Mishra revealed the decision and said that it was taken as the date clashed with Republic Day celebrations.
