Tennis News: Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka has expressed his gratitude to the US Open despite not getting a wildcard to compete in the 2026 season.
The 2016 US Open champion was due to retire this season and the Grand Slam in New York this season was supposed to be the final Grand Slam of his career. He even flew to New York in the hope of getting a wildcard to compete in the Grand Slam, but he never got this facility.
On the other hand, the wildcard facility was given to Patrick Kypson because the 41 year old tennis player was reluctant to compete in the qualifying round with his current ranking in 127th position.
However, the former world number 3 tennis player did not feel disappointed, he was instead grateful for the past memories related to his success at the Grand Slam.
“When I first arrived in New York from a small farming village in Switzerland, everything felt so massive,” Wawrinka said via Instagram.
“The noise.
“I experienced some of the most emotional moments of my career here. Fierce battles, late-night games, an incredible atmosphere and the love of the crowd, these are all memories that will stay with me forever.”
“Winning the US Open, in the city that never sleeps, will forever be one of the best moments of my life. Thank you, New York. Thank you, US Open. Thank you to every fan who supported me, who pushed me, who believed in me, and shared all these emotions with me over the seasons. Forever grateful. Forever New York.”
The debate over Wawrinka’s decision to miss out on a wildcard opportunity will continue, but the tennis player with three Grand Slam titles has maintained a classy attitude ahead of his retirement from tennis at the end of this season.
