Tennis News: Ignacio Buse capped off a week to remember at the 2026 Winston-Salem Open when he defeated his opponent to lift the ATP level 250 tournament victory trophy.
The 22-year-old tennis player became the youngest champion in the history of the Winston-Salem Open, surpassing the Polish national Hubert Hurkacz who was 22 years and 6 months old – one month older than the Peruvian national tennis player – when he climbed the championship podium in the 2019 season.
In the final of the Winston-Salem Open this season, he silenced British tennis player Arthur Fery with a quite convincing result 6-3, 6-2, where he dictated the match with his forehand to win his second title this season. He put in a calm performance and kept his opponent under pressure with the Englishman unable to match the Peruvian’s relentless pace.
“This is very special for me,” Buse exclaimed. “With all the teams, we have trained very, very hard. Some things I think are tough for us to go through as players, but I also want to congratulate Arthur and his team.”
After getting through the first set in just 30 minutes, the third seed put more pressure on the fourth seed Fery’s serve and had three break opportunities in the second set before securing victory in just 77 minutes.
The Peruvian tennis player finished the final by converting four of the seven break point opportunities he created. After ensuring victory, he threw himself on the pitch in celebration before running towards the supporters’ box to share the happy moment with his team.
The win at the Winston-Salem Open was another chapter in the 22-year-old’s rapid progress. he was currently ranked 135th in the world last season. In May of this season, he won the first ATP tournament title of his career at the ATP 500 level tournament, the Hamburg Open. Now with a title win in Winston-Salem, he will occupy the highest ranking of his career to date, 31st in the world.
Buse also made history in the world of Peruvian tennis with his latest victory after he now became the second Peruvian male tennis player to win a hard-court tournament title after Jaime Yzaga, who won a total of eight titles in his career.
