National doubles training director Rexy Mainaky heaped sky-high praise on Aaron Chia / Soh Wooi Yik after the pair showed they still deserve to be among the world’s best by reaching the final of the BWF World Championships in New Delhi.
Aaron-Wooi Yik may have lost to the world number 3 seeded pair from China, Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang, in the final, but Rexy Mainaky feels there is much to admire about their journey throughout the tournament.
After all, the pair had just reunited for the world meet after splitting up two months earlier, with Wooi Yik pairing up with Man Wei Chong and Aaron playing with Aaron Tai.
However, there was no sign of a drop in form as Aaron-Wooi Yik cruised through to the final, including a resounding victory over defending champions and world No. 1 Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae of South Korea in the semifinals.
“Aaron and Wooi Yik showed their class. They separated after the Japan Open but came back together for the World Championship and played very well,” said Rexy.
“For them to finish on the World Championship podium was a very good effort.”
Rexy Mainaky felt that the final match did not go their way because Weikeng-Wang Chang put on a better performance and won with a score of 21-17, 21-16 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
“In the final, I felt it was not their lucky day. Praise should also be given to the Chinese pair, especially Wang Chang, who played very well and outplayed Aaron on the front court,” he added.
Aaron-Wooi Yik has now won all three colors of medals at the World Championships.
Four years ago, they made history by becoming Malaysia’s first badminton world champions in Tokyo in 2022.
A year later in Copenhagen, they failed to defend their title but still came home with a bronze medal.
