Chen Tang Jie Promises to Make Efforts to Get Through a Turbulent Season

Mixed doubles specialist Chen Tang Jie is determined not to let a tumultuous season disrupt her performance on court.

Chen Tang Jie admits that the turmoil surrounding him this year has taken a toll on him mentally following a knee injury suffered by his regular partner, Toh Ee Wei, subsequent changes in playing partners, and the departure of Nova Widianto as national coach.

“If I say it doesn’t affect me, then it’s not true. You need time to digest these things, especially now that our coach has also changed,” Tang Jie said on Friday.

“For me and everyone, we need time to digest everything because so many things are happening at once.”

“But as professional players, if there is a problem, it is our own problem that we have to overcome. We have to look for what we can do better,” he said.
Chen Tang Jie was initially paired with Clarissa San following Ee Wei’s injury and will partner Cheng Su Yin at the China Masters in Shenzhen from September 1-6.

Another adjustment awaits him on the coaching front, as the Malaysian Tennis Association is set to announce a new mixed doubles head coach.

National coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the association had identified a candidate for the position.

Tang Jie said the players must be responsible for adapting to the new coach.

“For good players, they should adapt to the coach, not the coach who has to adapt to the players,” he said.

“No coach comes in wanting their players to be worse. They always want to help players achieve more.”

“So whoever our coach is, I will try my best to work with him so that we can become a better combination,” he said.

Tang Jie’s main focus at the moment is his first tournament with Su Yin at the China Masters.

He described Su Yin as hard-working, competitive and one of the more experienced options, but said their chemistry could only be measured in competition.

“No matter how good the training is, we still have to see how we perform in the tournament because there is a lot of uncertainty,” he said.

Chen Tang Jie said that after witnessing several serious injuries this year, including Ee Wei’s, he had learned not to take the opportunity to compete lightly. “As long as I can step onto the field, I feel like I have the opportunity to perform and win, and I am grateful for that,” he added.
