Premier League News: Exequiel Palacios admitted that he was very happy after officially joining Ipswich Town and called the move to the Premier League club a childhood dream come true. The Argentinian midfielder completed the transfer on Thursday and signed a contract with Ipswich until the summer of 2030 after seven years at Bayer Leverkusen.
Ipswich Town reached an agreement with Leverkusen for the transfer of Exequiel Palacios worth 22.5 million euros, plus 5 million euros in bonuses. Bayer Leverkusen is also understood to receive 10 per cent of the profits if Ipswich sell the 27-year-old in the future.
“I’m happy to be at this club. I’m very happy because this is a new opportunity and challenge for me and my family, and I can’t wait to get started and help the team,” Palacios told TownTV. The move opens a new phase in his career after spending most of his professional career in Germany.
Palacios explained the reasons for choosing Ipswich after the club came to recruit him. “Firstly, because I feel Ipswich came looking for me, and I always try to do the best for me and my family. I think this is an extraordinary opportunity. This is a club that wants to be a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League. I am someone who likes challenges and wants to help the team,” he said.
Palacios previously spent seven years with Leverkusen and was part of the club’s successful period. He helped Leverkusen win the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal in the same year. After a long time at the club, the midfielder felt it was time to open a new chapter in his career.
“I was there for a long time. I spent a very big part of my career at Leverkusen and I think it’s the right time for a change. Being part of the club’s history is very special for me, but today is the start of a new phase in my career and life, and I’m very happy,” said Palacios.
Exequiel Palacios also recalled Leverkusen’s success in winning the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season. According to him, this success was born from the togetherness of the players and coaching staff who have great energy to bring the club to achieve important achievements.
“It was very beautiful because we built a great team and coaching staff. Everyone connected with the club had a lot of energy. Those were beautiful moments that will stay with me throughout my career and I hope one day to return to the club and remember the good times,” he said.
