Tennis News: Brazilian tennis player Joao Fonseca was forced to withdraw from the 2026 US Open season after failing to recover in time from the injury he had just suffered.

In a statement posted on social media, the world number 26 confirmed that he was forced to withdraw from the final Grand Slam of the 2026 season, the US Open due to an abdominal injury. He recently appeared at the Cincinnati Open, but withdrew from his second match against Australian Christopher O’Connell due to the problem. Earlier this month, he made it to the third round of the Canadian Open before losing to American Ben Shelton.

“After undergoing examinations and starting treatment for my abdominal injury, my team and I realized that I needed more time to fully recover in order to return to competing at the highest level,” Fonseca wrote on Instagram.

“Unfortunately, that means I won’t be able to play at the US Open. This decision was not easy to take, as the tournament is very special to me. We will continue to work hard so that I can return as soon as possible.”

According to ESPN Brasil, the 20-year-old returned to Rio de Janeiro shortly after his stint in Cincinnati ended to treat pain in the left side of his stomach. Exact details regarding the injury have not been made public and it is unclear how long he will be out of the tournament.

The tennis player who has won two ATP tournament titles made his debut at the US Open last season, where he reached the second round before losing to the 21st seed, Tomas Machac. He also won the junior category at the Grand Slam in the 2023 season, making him the third player from his country to achieve this feat after Tiago Fernandes and Thiago Seyboth Wild.

The Brazilian tennis player recorded 19-13 in ATP tournaments this season, including reaching the quarterfinals in three tournaments, namely the Monte Carlo Open, Munich Open and French Open.

Fonseca is the third player in the top 30 to withdraw from this season’s US Open, which starts on Sunday (30/8). The highest profile tennis player who also missed the Grand Slam was world number 1, Jannik Sinner, who had to be sidelined due to a right knee injury.
