Tennis News: Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli spoiled the star-studded party at the 2026 US Open, when they looked calm to beat Carlos Alcaraz and Serena Williams.

Bencic and Cobolli were not afraid when facing the star team, Williams and Alcaraz with 5-4, 4-1, a victory that sent the Swiss – Italian duo through to the semifinals of the US Open.

“Being able to compete against Carlos and Serena was a great honor. We really felt their aura. It was truly an honor to be able to compete against them,” said Bencic.

Hours after beating Alexander Zverev and Taylor Townsend 4-2, 4-2 in the first round, Bencic and Cobolli returned to the court with similar determination to beat Alcaraz – a player who has won seven Grand Slam singles titles – and Williams – a player who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles.

“Competing against Serena and Carlos at Arthur Ashe Stadium was not easy. I felt tired before the match and I feel tired now,” admitted Cobolli.

Alcaraz and Williams started their campaign brightly when they beat doubles stars Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool, but they failed to contain fellow top singles players, the Swiss – Italian duo, who were able to maintain their composure in crucial moments of the first set before finally securing victory in 55 minutes.

The Spanish national, who is returning to competition for the first time since suffering a right wrist injury in April, admitted he felt nervous ahead of his return to court, but he enjoyed the experience of competing again.

“Everyone could see how nervous I was,” said Alcaraz. “I committed a double foul on the first point. I was really very nervous. I was out for almost five months. I almost forgot what it felt like to step foot on the court again. The nervousness only felt for the first few games, then Serena made everything feel easy for me.”

In another match, the first seeded pair, Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka, lost to doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten 4-1, 2-4, 10-2 in the first round of the US Open.

Siniakova and Patten then lost to Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina who won 5-4, 4-5, 10-8 to advance to the last four against the Swiss – Italian duo.
