Tennis News: Alexandra Eala advanced to the second round of the US Open for the second time in a row thanks to a convincing win in straight sets over Mary Stoiana.
Playing in front of a packed crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium, the Filipino tennis player saved two break point opportunities in the opening game and raced to a 5-0 lead. Stoiana, who was making her Grand Slam debut, managed to score in the sixth game, but the Filipino won her service game without dropping a single point in the next game to lead by one set.
The 21-year-old again faced break point opportunities in his first two service games of the second set, but managed to break the threat on both occasions. After breaking his opponent’s serve for a 3-2 lead, he continued to dominate the game and finally won the match with a convincing result 6-1, 6-2 in 1 hour 17 minutes.
“I am very happy with my performance this time,” said Eala. “It’s never easy to compete, especially in the first round of a tournament — let alone the US Open — and I think Mary has been in good form lately. So yeah, I’m very happy.”
Stoiana’s most striking statistic in the match was his success rate in converting break point opportunities. He failed to capitalize on any of the six break point opportunities he created, while the Filipino tennis player managed to convert four of the eight break point opportunities he created.
The 17th seed’s victory continues his impressive performance in a series of hard-court tournaments in North America, which culminated in his success in winning the title in Washington. He has now won nine of his last 11 matches on hard courts since Wimbledon, the event where he reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Eala will next face Oleksandra Oliynykova in the second round of the US Open, after the Ukrainian tennis player beat the host player, Reese Brantmeier, 6-4, 6-4. He is also 1-0 up in head to heads against the Filipino, after he won their meeting in Strasbourg earlier this season.
In other action, French tennis player Leolia Jeanjean beat Dutch tennis player Arantxa Rus with 7-6, 6-2 and booked a second round match against the 24th seed, Anastasia Potapova, who silenced Latvian tennis player Darja Semenistaja with 6-2, 6-2.
