Tennis News: For the second time in recent weeks, the 2026 French Open champion, Mirra Andreeva, won in straight sets over Janice Tjen.
Appearing dominant, the fifth seed beat Tjen 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the US Open which was held at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. Just two weeks ago, he survived the challenge presented by the Indonesian tennis player at the Cincinnati Open and won 6-1, 7-6.
“Our meeting in Cincinnati was tough,” Andreeva admitted. “I remember the conditions were difficult. It was hot and humid and it was the first time I had faced him. It wasn’t an easy match and when I saw the draw I thought, ‘Okay. He’s not an easy opponent to face’.”
“This time, I tried to communicate with the coach to find out what I could improve so that I felt confident on the court. I just tried to play very aggressively and dare to take my shots. This time the match went better.”
In Cincinnati, the 19-year-old won the opening set in 28 minutes. At the same point in time in New York, he was up 5-2 after breaking Tjen’s serve without dropping a point, then closed out the set three minutes later by winning his service game, again without dropping a point. He scored 12 points in a row to end the first set.
The key to the fifth seed’s game, both in Cincinnati and in New York, is his serve. Two weeks ago, Tjen managed to complicate things in the second set by taking riskier moves on his forehand — his signature shot — and winning more games to pressure the fifth seed, who this time was able to meet the challenge. He never dropped a service game in Cincinnati, just like his performance in New York this week.
The 19 year old tennis player did not face much difficulty in the second set. He put in a solid performance to book a spot in the second round of the US Open for the fourth time in a row.
Waiting for Andreeva in the second round was German tennis player, Eva Lys, who also performed impressively when she beat Czech player, Gabriela Knutson, 6-3, 6-3.
In the other first round, 23rd seed Elise Mertens eliminated Spaniard Kaitlin Quevedo 6-4, 6-4 and will face Uzbekistan Maria Timofeeva in the second round of the US Open.
