Tennis News: Former world number 8 Karen Khachanov claimed her first win over a top 10 player in the 2026 season in the second round of the US Open.

The 2021 Olympic silver medalist in Tokyo successfully beat the world number 4 and US Open semifinalist last season, Felix Auger Aliassime, who appeared to be having physical difficulties, with 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

After winning the first set, Canadian tennis player Auger Aliassime made 30 unforced errors and his strength quickly faded in the second round of the US Open which lasted 3 hours 16 minutes. He failed to find his rhythm and was battered on his second serve after winning only 41 percent of his service points.

After that, the third seed opened up about the physical problems he was facing.

“It’s hard to talk about anything other than my physical condition. After one and a half sets, I felt unwell, dizzy, had blurry vision and couldn’t recover. I thought maybe it would pass, but it didn’t,” admitted Auger Aliassime.

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old arrived in Flushing Meadows, New York having lost all three of his hard-court tournament matches since a third-round defeat at Wimbledon in July. This week, he is also competing as a tennis player ranked 50th in the world after at this time last season he was still ranked in the top 10.

Despite a tough season, in which he recorded 18-18, the world number 50 has now reached at least the third round in all four Grand Slams this season.

“I hope he feels better and recovers quickly. If he is injured, I don’t know. What I can say from my side is that I tried to give my best performance. I fought and I feel happy to get this victory,” said Khachanov.

Thanks to this victory, the world number 50 tennis player has now advanced to the third round of the US Open for the first time since he qualified for the semifinals of the 2022 season. Waiting for him in the third round is the French tennis player, Benjamin Bonzi, who eliminated the 32nd seed, Ignacio Buse with 6-2, 7-6, 6-0.

“The last month didn’t go well for me, so, we have been training and I believe I am fit,” added Khachanov. “The last tournament in North America, with the US Open, came with the mindset of playing well and trying to progress one step at a time.”
