Tennis News: Yuliia Starodubtseva successfully beat Janice Tjen 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the 2026 Monterrey Open season which lasted 1 hour 50 minutes.
The Ukrainian tennis player who is ranked 74th in the world managed to beat the Indonesian tennis player, Tjen, who is ranked higher, namely 35th in the world.
These results continue the positive progress of Ukrainian tennis players in Monterrey. She started the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over world number 48 Lilli Tagger, meaning she has now made it two straight wins on hard courts after previously experiencing a mixed run of results, including defeats to Daria Snigur, Maya Joint and Sloane Stephens.
The performance of the seventh seed, Tjen, on hard courts recently has also been considered unstable. Before this defeat, she had beaten another Ukrainian player, Dayana Yastremska, in three sets, but before that she had lost four of the last five matches she played on hard court, including against Mirra Andreeva, Liudmila Samsonova and Anna Kalinskaya.
This victory is another important achievement for Starodubtseva this season. In the clay-court season, she defeated Grand Slam champions Elena Rybakina and Madison Keys, while her recent hard-court record includes wins over Eva Lys and Cristina Bucsa. On the other hand, Tjen is still able to beat tough opponents, as proven by his success in beating Leylah Annie Fernandez three times in the series of matches.
The Ukrainian’s progress to the quarter-finals of the Monterrey Open strengthened his position after a difficult summer, while Tjen’s early exit highlighted the pressures of his higher ranking and the need for increased consistency when playing on hard courts.
In the quarter-finals of the Monterrey Open, Starodubtseva will face second seed, Elise Mertens or Hungarian tennis player, Panna Udvardy who eliminated Australian tennis player, Maya Joint with 7-6, 6-1.
In other action, French tennis player Diane Parry defeated another Ukrainian tennis player, Oleksandra Oliynykova, 6-4, 7-6. Advancing to the quarter-finals in Monterrey, she will meet the first seed, Ekaterina Alexandrova or the Danish tennis player, Clara Tauson.
Meanwhile, Czech tennis player Nikola Bartunkova survived a fierce match and knocked out lucky loser from Taiwan, Liang En Shuo with 6-7, 7-5, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, she will face the eighth seed, Cristina Bucsa or her compatriot, Darja Vidmanova.
