The Minnesota Timberwolves and Utah Jazz have reached a strategic player exchange agreement. Veteran tight end Josh Green was traded to Utah, while the Timberwolves received Cody Williams and John Konchar. This step was taken by the Timberwolves to ease their salary space situation, so they can include Jonathan Kuminga in the line-up without any problems.
When news of Minnesota’s deal with free agent Jonathan Kuminga broke into the public, Timberwolves fans cheered. However, behind this euphoria, the team faced significant obstacles. They are still stuck in the salary cap and only have about $4 million in cap space, while it would take more than $6 million to grant Kuminga the taxpayer’s mid-level exemption.
According to Charania’s report, the Timberwolves plan to keep Williams but are willing to release Konchar. They will apply a “stretch provision” to spread Konchar’s salary burden of 6.17 million US Dollars over three seasons, which means an annual salary burden of only around 2.06 million US Dollars. By trading Green’s $14.68 million contract for Williams ($6.02 million) and spreading out Konchar’s salary, Minnesota managed to save about $6.6 million, putting them $10.6 million under the salary cap.
On the other hand, Utah got Green, a six-year experienced player who struggled last season with the Charlotte Hornets. After returning from shoulder surgery, Green averaged 4.3 points per game but was impressive with 42 percent accuracy from the 3-point line. In Utah, Green has a chance to get playing time by utilizing his solid defensive abilities, an important aspect for Will Hardy this season.
Jazz also has financial leeway, operating more than $22 million below the luxury tax threshold. Therefore, the additional salary from this exchange is not a problem. Utah now has 14 players on standard contracts, giving them the flexibility to add another veteran, give camp invitees a chance, or leave it open for midseason dynamics.
