The Boston Celtics enter the new season with a fresh look. The iconic duet of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, which has been the backbone of the team, has now changed. The Celtics rely on the collaboration between Tatum and Paul George to maintain their hegemony in the league.
The Celtics’ new figure is starting to show his strength. Tatum and George were seen seriously training in Los Angeles, preparing to face the challenges of the 2026-2027 NBA. Mike Conley, another new player, was also seen in the training session, adding to the enthusiasm of the team’s preparations.
Paul George joined the Celtics last July. The six-time All-NBA player came to Boston in a blockbuster trade that sent Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers, while also acquiring a future draft asset for the Celtics.
George ended the 2025-2026 season with an impressive record: averages of 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game, as well as 39.2 percent accuracy from three points. Even though he joined the Celtics, George is not projected to replace Tatum’s role as the axis of attack, but rather as the star’s main supporter.
Jayson Tatum, who only appeared in 16 games last season due to an Achilles injury during the 2025 NBA Playoffs, averaged 21.8 points and 10 rebounds per game. Now, entering the season with full preparation, Tatum is again Boston’s mainstay.
In the middle of the season break, the Celtics made a big maneuver. The trade between Brown and George sparked controversy, especially because Brown was coming off his best season and was in the running for an MVP candidate. However, the decision was driven more by financial considerations. The Celtics, with two players on supermax contracts, are looking to reduce the salary cap burden and gain flexibility to strengthen the team’s depth.
This big move raises questions about the future direction of the Celtics. Losing Brown, a key player in the rotation, is a challenge for Joe Mazzulla’s team. George, who is entering the final phase of his career, is expected to be able to fill the existing void. (rag)
