Tennis News: Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner has decided to withdraw from the 2026 US Open season due to the knee injury he suffered at Wimbledon.
The world number 1 has been absent since his successful defense of his Wimbledon title, after he beat German Alexander Zverev in four sets.
The 25-year-old tennis player has dominated the 2026 season by bagging 44 wins and only three defeats, including winning six titles, namely five Masters titles and one Grand Slam title.
It has been a frustrating time for the 25-year-old who had won all nine of the Masters 1000 tournaments this season before pulling out of tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati.
A knee injury suffered at Wimbledon has disrupted the world number 1’s preparations for the US Open and he has now revealed that he will miss the final Grand Slam of the season which is usually held in Flushing Meadows, New York.
When delivering the news on social media, X, Sinner expressed his sadness, “Even though I have worked hard with the team and medical staff, we have been forced to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this season.”
“We got back to training on the courts in Monte Carlo in the last few days and realized that I still need more time to recover from the problem with my right knee. Of course I feel very sad and disappointed, because New York has a special place in my heart. I am really looking forward to coming back and playing in a great atmosphere in front of the great fans there.”
The world number 1 tennis player became champion in New York in the 2024 season (defeating Taylor Fritz) and lost to Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz in the final last season.
This means that the Australian Open this season will be the only Grand Slam that Sinner and Alcaraz participate in simultaneously. The Spanish tennis player will compete in the US Open which starts on August 30.
