Tennis News: Home tennis player, Frances Tiafoe secured a place in the 2026 Cincinnati Open final after beating compatriot, Brandon Nakashima in straight sets.
In a duel between home players, the 17th seed beat the 27th seed, Nakashima, 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the final of the Masters 1000 tournament, the Ringnat Open, for the second time in the last three seasons.
The former world number 10 will face Arthur Fils in the title round of the Cincinnati Open, with the French national currently leading 1-0 in their head to head after he won their first meeting at the Miami Open last season.
Thanks to the win over Nakashima, Tiafoe recorded his 37th win of the 2026 season. Only Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev have more wins than the American this season, having bagged 44 and 46 respectively.
The 28-year-old surpassed Spaniard Rafael Jodar, who has so far racked up 36 wins in his impressive breakthrough season.
The world number 23 tennis player recorded a fairly mediocre performance throughout this season, even though he managed to win his fourth title at the Halle Open (defeating Taylor Fritz). In Grand Slams, his best achievement to date is reaching the fourth round, which he achieved at the French Open (losing to Matteo Arnaldi).
Before his work at the Cincinnati Open this season, the best result for the tennis player who has so far won four titles in the Masters 1000 tournament was reaching the quarterfinals at the Miami Open.
Despite this defeat, Nakashima has recently performed very impressively, after he reached the semifinals in Washington and Cincinnati as well as the final in Montreal.
“Salute to Brandon,” Tiafoe exclaimed. “Obviously he’s a fellow American and he’s someone who’s very close to me — we’ve had a very close relationship for a long time — and it’s really great to see his form at the moment.”
“It’s also great to see Wayne Ferreira alongside him on the sidelines. I’m very happy for both of them. However, I know what the situation will be like and I’m very enthusiastic. I’m excited to face him, even though our previous head-to-head record is in my favour.”
“I realize that this Masters 1000 semifinal match will feel different. So, yes, I would love to be able to face him again, especially with Wayne on his team.”
Apart from qualifying for the Cincinnati Open final, Tiafoe has also now risen 11 places to 12th in the world.
