European Basketball News: A EuroLeague title with Olympiacos, a 12-year NBA career, and two Olympic silver medals in Tokyo and Paris were actually enough for Evan Fournier to decide to retire, at least from the French national team.
However, as he revealed to the French newspaper “L’Equipe”, Victor Wembanyama gave him additional motivation to continue wearing the uniform of “les Bleus”.
“He is a global superstar, but in his daily life, he is also a great person, cares about other people and is really determined to perform at his best,” said Evan Fournier about the new captain of the French national team. “I have to admit, having him there was a motivation for me to keep going.”
“Seeing a young figure who wants to achieve and is willing to work hard is really inspiring. I don’t want to come just to be there,” admitted the 33-year-old *guard* player, at a time when France is undergoing a relatively smooth qualifying process for the upcoming 2027 FIBA World Cup.

Fournier, who for many years has been a leading figure on the French national team, certainly realizes that now is the time for a new generation to take over that role. Regarding his current role, he admitted: “I can be the player who makes sure everything runs well and in order.”
However, Fournier—who is the 2026 EuroLeague Final Four MVP—still has more than enough energy and ability to continue contributing.
