Tennis News: Diane Parry had no plans to compete in the 2026 Monterrey Open until she finally made the decision to participate.
This decision also produced encouraging results after the French tennis player will head to the US Open this season with the first WTA tournament title in her career.
The 23-year-old achieved this achievement after beating second seed Elise Mertens 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 in the final of the WTA 500 level tournament, the Monterrey Open, a victory that capped a pretty crazy week after she made a last-minute decision to make a third visit to Monterrey.
“I came here with almost nothing,” Parry admitted in his victory speech after fighting for 2 hours 33 minutes for his third win over a top seed in his last five matches.
Two weeks ago, the French tennis player recovered from losing a set to beat the Belgian player, Mertens at the Cincinnati Open, but he started their rematch more convincingly.
The 23-year-old built a 4-1 lead before seeing Mertens equalize at 4-4. Undeterred, he finally took the last two games to take a one set lead.
After failing to win a single game in the second set, the French tennis player started the third set with the same game as he showed in the first set. He won the first three games and five of the six games before finally winning the match by capitalizing on a second match point opportunity.
On his way to winning the match, he saved two break point opportunities in his first service game of the third set and another two as he went 3-0 up. But most crucially, he trusted his forehand when he needed it most. He shot 21 winners, almost twice as many as Mertens and saved a total of 12 of the 17 break point opportunities he faced.
The French tennis player previously recorded 0-6 in the semifinals of the WTA tournament until she finally defeated fifth seed Ann Li in the semifinals of the Monterrey Open this season. In total, she sealed five wins over players ranked in the top 50 throughout the week and became the second French woman to win the title in Monterrey after Marion Bartoli in the 2009 season.
“I don’t know what I expected for this tournament. And sometimes, that’s when the good stories happen. So, I feel very happy and very grateful for the things I fought for this week,” said Parry.
