Carrick Supports Mason Mount to Make a Big Impact at MU

Football News: Manchester United manager, Michael Carrick, gives full support to Mason Mount to make a big impact on his team this season.

Mason Mount started the first four games of pre-season and was outstanding in Manchester United’s midfield alongside Andrey Santos. However, he was unlucky because he suffered an injury against Paris Saint-Germain which made him miss the last two friendly matches and the Premier League opener against Hull City.

Mount has returned to training this week and could make a comeback today when Ipswich Town travel to Old Trafford. At his pre-match press conference, Michael Carrick was asked whether Mount could still have a big enough impact despite repeated injuries disrupting his development.

“Yes, 100 percent. Mase can have a big impact, there’s no doubt. He’s a top player and he started pre-season and went through it very well,” Carrick told MUTV.

“He hasn’t been out for too long, so he’ll adapt quickly.”

Mount has looked increasingly comfortable playing in midfield during pre-season and was set to start against Hull before a poorly timed injury got in the way. Unfortunately, repeated similar setbacks came just as the 27-year-old appeared to be starting to build momentum.

At the start of last season, Mount seemed completely in sync with his team-mates and looked ready to show what he was capable of. His former manager, Ruben Amorim, even deployed him in a false nine role and Mount responded with a series of promising performances before another injury brought his progress to an abrupt halt.

Michael Carrick was also asked whether Mount had finally overcome the mental obstacles caused by his repeated injuries.

“He was a truly great figure and personality and did a lot of the right things with good intentions.”

“He’s the kind of person with whom you can have a good relationship and understanding.”

“He’s disappointed to have that minor injury, but it won’t affect him for what’s coming next season.”

Mount has struggled to really revive his career at United since completing his £55m move from Chelsea in 2023. The England international has earned the admiration of his former managers, Erik ten Hag and Amorim, while Carrick also holds him in high regard for his football intelligence and relentless tenacity.

But the figures tell a worrying story, with Mason Mount missing 70 games for United over the last three years. This season could be a defining one for the midfielder, and another long absence could force Manchester United to consider letting him go next summer.
