Is there a rift brewing between world number 4 pair Aaron Chia / Soh Wooi Yik and national men’s doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi?
The questions grew after Aaron-Wooi Yik , fresh from winning a silver medal at the World Championships in New Delhi, publicly admitted that they were considering their options and could leave the national team to become independents if they split permanently.
However, Herry IP revealed that the couple’s impressive performance in New Delhi is not an automatic guarantee of a permanent reunion.
Although the Indonesian coach insists that this reshuffle is designed to freshen up the Men’s Doubles Association of Malaysia (BAM) men’s doubles combination, Aaron-Wooi Yik has made it clear that their priority is to stay together and chase Malaysia’s first Olympic gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Herry admitted Aaron/Wooi Yik’s performance at the World Championships had been impressive, but said a decision on the future of their partnership would only be made after a comprehensive assessment at the end of the year, once the current overhaul is complete.
Aaron / Wooi Yik, who have tried various pairs since last month, reunited at the World Championships and reached the final before losing to the world number 3 pair from China, Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang, on Sunday.
They will now be separated again as part of initial plans for a revamp of the national men’s doubles.
“Yes, we still need to evaluate the results of their partnerships with other players. Towards the end of the year, we will be able to determine which partnerships will remain and which will not,” said Herry at KLIA on Tuesday.
“So, a final decision can only be taken at the end of the year.”
The coaching team still wants to assess the players’ compatibility and performance with different partners before deciding on the best combination for the national men’s doubles squad.
“Of course, this change in partnership brings many positive benefits to the players,” added Herry.
“The doubles players benefit from this move.”
However, Herry IP only praised Aaron-Wooi Yik’s performance in New Delhi, where they also shocked the world number 1 pair from South Korea, Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae, in the semifinals.
“Even though they didn’t win the title, I think the results they achieved were quite good. But, of course, it would be even better if they won the title.”
“Even though they weren’t paired together for several tournaments, when they were reunited, they were still able to find their rhythm because they had been together for so long.”
Herry said that the overhaul was not just about finding new combinations, but was also intended to give players more experience by allowing them to pair up with different teammates.
“Of course, this change in partnership brings many positive things for the players,” he said.
However, their strong performance in New Delhi proves that Aaron / Wooi Yik have not lost their chemistry despite the reshuffle and opens the door to a reunion next year.
