Tennis News: Iga Swiatek’s ranking dropped three positions in the latest WTA ranking list after failing to defend her title at the WTA level 1000 tournament, the Cincinnati Open.
After suffering an early defeat in the third round at Wimbledon and failing to defend his title at the Grand Slam, the Polish tennis player dropped from world number 3 to world number 8. Then, by winning her first title of the season at the WTA level 1000 tournament, the Canadian Open, Toronto, she moved up three places and returned to number 5 in the world.
The tennis player who has so far collected six Grand Slam titles also started her career at the Cincinnati Open promisingly and was only two wins away from winning back-to-back titles, but her hopes were dashed after the host tennis player, Jessica Pegula, beat her in a fiercely contested semifinal with the final score showing 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
As a result of his failure to defend his Cincinnati Open title, the former world number 1 lost around 600 points and returned to the ranking he occupied when he started a series of hard-court tournaments in North America in the second half of this season.
The Polish tennis player’s journey in Cincinnati may have ended in a tough way, but he sounded quite optimistic about the development of his game ahead of the US Open.
“We have made progress in this intense phase of the season. The wind conditions made today’s match difficult, but we put pressure on each other. My performance was not good in the first set, but being able to recover in the second set and take advantage of every opportunity that existed was a positive change,” said Swiatek after being eliminated from the Cincinnati Open.
The Polish tennis player was scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, but he postponed this by withdrawing from the star-studded mixed doubles US Open, where he was partnered with Norwegian Casper Ruud.
They finished as runners up at the US Open last season, but the Polish national chose not to play this time because he felt he needed to rest after playing a total of 11 matches in Toronto and Cincinnati.
Now, Swiatek has several days to rest and prepare for the US Open which will start on Sunday (30/8).
