Tennis News: Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka’s hopes of competing in the 2026 US Open season before his retirement have been dashed.
The US Open organizers did not give a wild card to the former world number 3 tennis player for this season’s US Open, even though he won the men’s singles event in the 2016 season.
The act of disregard was strongly condemned by those who witnessed the incident, with one tennis fan calling the decision ‘disgraceful and beyond words.’
This decision is truly difficult to explain. Paying tribute to a former champion in such a way feels incredibly unfair and unwarranted. The tennis player’s old coach, Magnus Norman, also responded to the news on social media.
A French Open finalist in the 2000 season, Norman has been the Swiss tennis player’s coach on three separate occasions, namely from the 2013 to 2017 season, 2018 to 2020, and from the 2022 season to the present.
The former world number two tennis player has always been an inseparable part of Wawrinka’s coaching team and an influential figure in the journey of the tennis player who has so far won three Grand Slam titles. He also responded to the decision not to give a US Open wildcard to a Swiss tennis player via Instagram.
“We fought hard to appear in one last Grand Slam at the age of 41, but we haven’t succeeded in making it happen,” Norman wrote in a message on Instagram Story, which was accompanied by a photo of himself hugging Wawrinka.
“It certainly hurts, but thank you for all the beautiful memories on and off the field that we have shared with you and the team in New York over the last 13 seasons.”
The 41-year-old will now shift his focus to a series of hard-court tournaments in Asia, which will start after the end of the US Open. Last season, he competed in the Shanghai Open and lost in the first round to Hungarian tennis player Fabian Marozsan.
Earlier this season, the Swiss tennis player explained his plans to retire at the ATP level 500 tournament which was held in Basel in October.
“Maybe in Basel, at the end of the season in Switzerland, most likely there,” Wawrinka told YouTube channel First&Red. “But you know, when you’re 41, you have to take it week by week!”
