The Los Angeles Lakers have just entered a new chapter in their long history. Ownership of the club changed hands from Mark Walter to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner. This transformation sparked mixed reactions among Lakers employees. Many felt relieved, after previously feeling dissatisfied with Walter’s leadership style.
Walter’s fantastic sales, reaching 12.5 billion US Dollars, marked an important milestone. Previously, Walter had acquired the Lakers for 10 billion US dollars last summer—a figure that at that time shocked the sports world.
However, an unpleasant aroma wafted from within the organization. Dan Woike of The Athletic reports that some employees welcomed the optimism about the new owners. They believe that previous leadership was not appreciated enough. “Multiple sources across multiple departments expressed renewed confidence in the direction of the franchise under Iger and Kushner,” Woike wrote.
Some felt the Dodgers’ use of analytics was too dominant, which was done in an arrogant manner that caused discomfort among operational staff and players. Although the new management arrived without a Dodgers-class track record, many welcomed the change.
That said, most employees still haven’t fully accepted the previous sale and don’t seem too bothered by the change in ownership. “In general, it doesn’t affect Lakers employees. The past year or so has been full of chaos, philosophical changes, new coworkers and new procedures,” Woike explained. The shock of previous sales is still burned into their memories so phone alerts and other surprising text messages feel quite familiar.
Meanwhile, according to Sportscape Magazine, there is a strong possibility that Lakers employees may not work under Iger and Kushner on the expected schedule. Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss has steadfastly opposed her brothers’ efforts to sell the Buss family’s remaining 17.8 percent stake to a new ownership group. Through her lawyer, Jeanie argued that the sale had to be approved by all three trustees, including herself.
The dispute centers on a 2017 court order aimed at maintaining his status as the team’s controlling owner. Under NBA rules, owners must own at least 15 percent of a franchise.
Nevertheless, the five Buss brothers—Jim, Johnny, Janie, Joey, and Jesse—were united in their desire to sell. However, Buss’ camp alleged that ESPN’s coverage of the matter relied on “fake” leaks.
With the $12.5 billion sale of Walter’s controlling stake still awaiting approval by the NBA board, the rift in the Buss family adds a layer of uncertainty to a deal that appears close to completion.
