An Se Young Aims for Second Grand Slam at the 2026 Asian Games

Ligaolahraga.com –

On the 23rd (Korean time), An Se Young won the women’s singles final at the 2026 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships held in New Delhi, India, defeating Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi (world No. 2) in 49 minutes with a game score of 2-0 (21-17 21-14).

An Se-young, who became the first Korean player to win the women’s singles title at the World Championships in Copenhagen in 2023, has lifted the second trophy of her career.

An Se Young is now aiming for a place that no one has reached before. This is because, by winning the World Championship, he has taken the first step towards the second Grand Slam of his career.

If she reaches the top at the Asian Games, Asian Championships and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, she will complete a Double Grand Slam, a feat rarely seen in women’s singles history.

Based on the major women’s singles titles she has achieved to date, An Se-young’s career is already at a historic level.

Ahn Se-young won the gold medal in the women’s singles event at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. She achieved the top spot by defeating Chen Yufei in Hangzhou, China. He then won a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and completed his first Grand Slam by winning the Asian Championships last April.

Until now, only two women’s badminton players have won the Grand Slam, namely An Se Young and Carolina Marin from Spain.

Since Marin announced his retirement in the first half of this year and withdrew from active competition, it has been impossible for him to achieve another Grand Slam. This effectively leaves Ahn Se-young as the only remaining candidate.

Notably, with her recent World Championship win, Ahn Se-young has taken a step towards the second Grand Slam of her career. If he wins the gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games next September, and then conquers next year’s Asian Championships and the 2028 Olympics, he will achieve an unprecedented “Double Grand Slam.”

Winning every tournament even once is a lifelong goal for world-class athletes, but An Se young has achieved it once. And now, he faces that challenge once again.
