The faces of the world’s 10 best men’s singles players have undergone several changes following the recent World Championships in New Delhi, including Indonesian badminton star Jonatan Christie.
With two French players and one Canadian in the top 10, and Jonatan Christie ranked No. 1 in the world for the first time, this shift bodes well for the sport.
Ironically, Jonatan Christie is the first Indonesian men’s singles player in 25 years to return to the top of the standings since the era of Taufik Hidayat during his heyday (2000-2001).
World champion Alex Lanier of France rose three places to No. 7, while teammate Christo Popov also shot to No. 2.
Canada’s Victor Lai, who won a bronze medal at the world championships, continues to fall alongside experienced players in 9th place.
The Malaysian players continue to lag far behind, but their best player and world No. 27, Leong Jun Hao, will get a chance to close that gap when he participates in the 2026 China Masters which starts on Tuesday in Shenzhen.
He will face Jonathan in the first round.
If he wins, 26-year-old Jun Hao will face Koki Watanabe of Japan or Jason Gunawan of Singapore in the second round.
China’s Shi Yuqi, who lost to India’s Ayush Shetty in the first round of the world championships, will get a chance to make up for the loss.
The former world number 1, who has dropped five places to sixth in the world, will face Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew.
The winner will likely face another Chinese player, Weng Hongyang.
The other top ten players registered for the tournament are Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn (world No. 3), Taiwan’s Chou Tien-chen (4th), Denmark’s Anders Antonsen (5th), Japan’s Kodai Naraoka (8th), and China’s Li Shifeng (10th).
The China Masters tournament looks set to become a mini world championship event, and those who missed out last week will have a chance to restore order.
