Soh Wooi Yik was surprised to be kicked out of the 2026 Asian Games squad

Ligaolahraga.com –

Men’s doubles specialist Soh Wooi Yik said he was shocked by his disqualification from the upcoming 2026 Asian Games, but has accepted the decision despite missing out on the chance to win a gold medal.

Soh Wooi Yik said he was surprised by the Tennis Association of Malaysia (BAM) decision to drop him from the squad, leaving his usual partner, Aaron Chia, to partner Tee Kai Wun for the September 19 to October 4 Games in Japan’s Aichi-Nagoya.

Independent pair Goh Sze Fei / Nur Izzuddin Rumsani will also represent the Malaysian national team.

The exclusion came as a shock after Aaron-Wooi Yik, the 2022 world champion, won a silver medal at the BWF World Championships despite splitting last month.

“I only found out about it at the last minute, so there was actually no discussion beforehand,” Wooi Yik said upon arriving at KLIA from New Delhi on Tuesday.

“However, as a senior player now, I can accept this situation. Everyone deserves a chance to play, so whoever plays, I have no problem with that.”

“For now, I will continue to fight and give my best, because there have been so many changes in the last few months,” he said.

Aaron-Wooi Yik is the only Malaysian badminton player to make it to the podium at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, where they took home a bronze medal.

The Malaysian national team’s doubles coach from Indonesia, Herry Iman Pierngadi, confirmed that Wooi Yik could not be included back in the squad because the final registration application deadline had ended on July 1.
