Rashid Sidek Hopes Aaron-Wooi Yik Will Not Leave the National Team

Badminton legend Datuk Rashid Sidek advised Aaron Chia / Soh Wooi Yik not to leave the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as long as the governing body continues to treat him fairly and provide him with the best support.

The Olympic bronze medalist emphasized that any decision regarding the world number 4 pair must be made through discussions involving the players, management and coaching team, not hastily.

Rashid Sidek believes Aaron-Wooi Yik will still be able to compete at the highest level after proving that they can go far in big tournaments.

“They can still perform well. They can reach the semifinals and final, so the motivation and desire to win is still there,” said Rashid.

“If I were Aaron-Wooi Yik, I would stay as long as BAM continued to treat me well. But if BAM didn’t treat me fairly, that would be a different matter.”

Aaron-Wooi Yik’s future is in the spotlight following a shake-up of the national men’s doubles coaching team, led by Herry Iman Pierngadi, who has been testing several players with different partners since last month.

However, Aaron-Wooi Yik showed that their partnership remains effective by achieving runner-up position at the World Championships in New Delhi, India.

Their performance has raised questions about whether they should stay together in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA28).

Wooi Yik also indicated that he is ready to consider all options, including becoming a professional player, to continue chasing an Olympic gold medal with Aaron.

Regarding the possibility of the two leaving BAM, Rashid said that it would not be a problem if they took the decision after considering every aspect.

However, he believes that Aaron-Wooi Yik should remain with the national body, which has provided extensive facilities and support for them throughout their careers.

“If possible, they should not leave because BAM has looked after them well all this time, including providing facilities and support,” he said.

“It’s up to them to discuss this issue, but if BAM still needs them and continues to treat them well, it would be better for them to stay.”

Rashid Sidek added that any decision to separate the pair should be handled carefully and should not be forced, as it could affect the players’ motivation and careers.

He said the players’ views must also be taken into consideration as they are the ones competing on the pitch and will bear the consequences of any changes in the partnership.
