Not an easy decision, Carlos Alcaraz is ready to return to action at the 2026 US Open

Tennis News: One of the topics of discussion ahead of the 2026 US Open season is whether Carlos Alcaraz will return to competition after being sidelined for a long time due to injury.

The Spanish tennis player was certainly happy because the answer turned out to be “yes”.

“My team and I are confident that I am ready. It was not an easy decision,” said Alcaraz. “I do whatever it takes to be ready. I try to do everything perfectly, both on and off the court, to establish readiness — going through very long, intense training sessions — just to see how my wrist reacts during training and after those tiring days.”

The closing Grand Slam of the season, the US Open will be the first event for the 2026 Australian Open champion since the tournament in Barcelona last April. Due to a wrist injury, he was forced to step aside from the field for four months.

“The first month was a bit difficult for me because I couldn’t do anything with my right arm. It was a tough period. But, at the same time, I enjoyed my time,” continued Alcaraz.

“I enjoyed spending time with my family and friends, as well as spending time at home. However, once I started practicing a little — because I didn’t know exactly when I would start — the thoughts were very difficult to deal with, I didn’t know if I would be ready for Cincinnati, the US Open, or if I would have to miss the entire series of tournaments in America.”

When facing a long-term injury, some tennis players choose to change their playing style to adapt to the injury. However, the 23-year-old tennis player said that he would not change his playing technique.

“No, absolutely not. I keep doing the same things. I don’t change anything regarding my technique, movements or the way I play. I just want to feel like I’m still myself. And I think that’s important,” said Alcaraz.

Most importantly, the former world number 1 tennis player is back in action amidst fierce competition. It is fitting that he returns to play in Flushing Meadows, New York, where he won the first Grand Slam title of his career in the 2022 season and made history as the youngest world number 1 in history.

The Spanish tennis player is also the defending champion of the US Open, where he previously competed with Serena Williams in mixed doubles this week. In singles, he will face Roman Safiullin in the first round.

“I came here with the feeling that I needed competition. I needed to come here to train with them, feel the competition atmosphere again, and this was really a test,” said Alcaraz.

“However, my condition is very good. I think the experience of the injury helped me a lot to realize that the main problem was actually in my own mind. I had to trust the team and the people around me who assured me that everything would be fine.”\

“So, I have to perform 100 percent. So far, the training sessions have gone very well. I’m trying to put aside the fear and play as usual.”
