Tennis News: Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer returns to the US Open during Fan Week in Flushing Meadows, New York to appear in an exhibition match.
The former tennis player, now 45 years old, took to Arthur Ashe Stadium and played alongside US tennis greats such as Andy Roddick, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi in front of a packed crowd in New York.
The former world number 1 tennis player retired from the world of tennis in the 2022 season, where he played his final match at the Laver Cup that season, playing in the doubles with his old rival, Rafael Nadal.
He ended his legendary career amidst injury problems and that is why he has no plans to return to playing any time soon. In an interview with the Today program, he was asked about the possibility of returning to the world of professional tennis in the near future.
Federer replied, “My body and my knee have had, like, five operations. That knee is tired. That knee deserves a rest and I played until I was almost 40. I’ve squeezed out all of myself. And I realized that in the end.”
“Based on experience throughout my career — I can’t speak for anyone else — I don’t think I’m the type of person who will retire and come back.”
Fellow legend Serena Williams took the tennis world by storm when she returned to competing in a professional tournament during the grass-court season. He is making his first appearance since the 2022 season at Queen’s Club and has competed at the Berlin Open, Wimbledon and Cincinnati Open, he is also scheduled to appear at the US Open soon.
Meanwhile, ahead of his induction into the Tennis Hall of Fame, Federer stated, “I am very proud to be able to play this sport.”
“When I see Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz doing what they are doing now, I think, ‘Wow? I was in that position before and did more or less the same thing on these pitches, under the pressure’.”
“I’m happy to be able to live a life like that. And hopefully I’ve also inspired young people to start playing tennis or playing sports, and get straight into it. It’s been a really incredible journey. I’m very happy and proud of that.”
