Tennis News: Arthur Fils expressed deep emotions after winning the first Masters 1000 tournament title in his career after defeating Frances Tiafoe in the final of the 2026 Cincinnati Open.
The 22-year-old tennis player has now become the first French tennis player in 12 seasons to lift the Masters title after winning the Cincinnati Open by beating American Frances Tiafoe in the top match.
The former world number 14 tennis player was very happy after recording this important achievement and shared this special moment for the first time with his parents, who were not present in the stands but provided support from a distance.
The French tennis player will appear at the 2026 Cincinnati Open as the 21st seed, with his previous best achievement at that level being twice advancing to the semifinals in Miami and Madrid this season. He started his career in Cincinnati by facing Yannick Hanfmann in the second round, then continued his fight for the title with wins over Jiri Lehecka, Alex De Minaur, Thiago Agustín Tirante, and Flavio Cobolli.
In the final, the 2026 Barcelona Open champion started the final match against the home favorite, Tiafoe, with a convincing performance and won the opening set 6-3. However, the home tennis player fought back tenaciously in the second set and only allowed the French national to win one game.
The deciding set was one-sided. After getting additional motivation during a break in the dressing room, the 21st seed wiped out the set without giving a single game to Tiafoe while securing a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 victory in 1 hour 28 minutes.
Excitement was overwhelming as he celebrated his historic victory with his team in the stands. He then made several special video calls to share the moment with his parents, father, Jean Philippe Fils and mother, Anne.
In his victory speech, he humbly appreciated Tiafoe’s struggle and congratulated him on his success in this tournament.
“It feels great to be here and compete against you in the final. When I was little, I often watched your performances on television. You are one of the figures who made me interested in watching tennis shows, so, I am very happy to see you back at this level of play, and I hope we will have many exciting matches in the future,” said Fils.
While speaking to his team and family, he emphasized that he has much bigger ambitions to pursue.
“It’s amazing, friends. I’m at a loss for words. I can’t say anything other than thank you very much. We’ve done an extraordinary job, and this journey is not over,” continued Fils.
“I always travel with my father every week. He wasn’t here when I won this trophy, but I want to say thank you too. Thank you to my whole family who are in Europe. Thank you everyone.”
With the US Open just around the corner, Fils hopes to follow in the footsteps of the three previous Cincinnati Open champions — Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz — who all went on to win titles at Flushing Meadows, New York.
