Tennis News: Italian tennis player Flavio Cobolli had to recover after losing the first two sets for the first time in his career at the 2026 US Open season.
After performing heroic actions, the fifth seed managed to beat Argentine tennis player Francisco Comesana 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the US Open.
The 24-year-old was knocked out of the first round of the Australian Open earlier this season, but bounced back at the French Open, where he advanced to a Grand Slam final for the first time in his career. For 60 minutes at Louis Armstrong Stadium, he looked as if he would once again taste the bitterness of a first-half defeat on the biggest stage.
However, the tennis player who had won three titles managed to recover, found better consistency in his game, and started to hit sharp forehand shots to equalize. In a tight fifth set — where he was trailing 0-2 — he finally sealed the win with a drive volley that Comesana couldn’t reach. He fell to his knees and shouted excitedly after achieving victory in 4 hours 14 minutes.
“I want to thank everyone who accompanied me in this extraordinary comeback effort,” said Cobolli. “After being two sets down, I went into the dressing room and changed everything. The match isn’t over until it’s over. You have to fight until the last point. I had an amazing team that helped me a lot and maybe that was the key to getting to the next round.”
Cobolli, who has previously lost all eight matches at Grand Slams after dropping the first two sets, will next face the player who qualified from the Australian qualifying round, Tristan Schoolkate who beat the host tennis player, Nishesh Basavareddy with 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The fifth seed has never gone beyond the third round of the US Open, but he arrived in New York in fine form after reaching the semifinals of the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati last month.
In other action, the 17th seed, Jakub Mensik eliminated Japanese tennis player, Shintaro Mochizuki with 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 and booked a second round match at the US Open against Austrian player, Jurij Rodionov who eliminated French player, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard with 7-6, 6-0, 7-6.
