Tennis News: Eva Lys admits that increased expectations brought additional pressure, which created “problems” for her and ultimately made her “completely lose the joy” of playing tennis.

If you remember, the German tennis player managed to enter the main round of the 2025 Australian Open season as a lucky loser at the last moment. The rest of the journey is well recorded. He successfully advanced to the round of 16 before finally losing to Iga Swiatek.

Before his brilliant performance at the 2025 Australian Open, he had only won one match at a Grand Slam and had never broken into the top 100 in the world rankings. However, after reaching the round of 16 in Melbourne, he became the first lucky loser since the 1988 season to reach that stage at the Grand Slam, while also securing a position in the top 100.

However, after the 2025 season which was a turning point in his career — in which he reached a career-high ranking by ranking 39th in the world on January 5 — the 24-year-old’s pace of improvement suddenly stopped. He experienced great difficulties, his match record this season was only 7-15 and his ranking dropped sharply to 98th in the world.

Even though the 2026 season has been difficult for her so far, the German tennis player managed to start her career at the US Open brilliantly after beating Gabriela Knutson in straight sets.

After that, the 24-year-old spoke very openly about the impact of the pressure he experienced throughout the 2026 season, which made him lose his joy in playing and finally decided to consult a psychologist.

“I did experience difficulties in several matches because of great pressure, both from myself and from outside. People expected me to play tennis like last season, without knowing how I felt or what I had actually experienced in the last few months,” explained Lys.

“Recently, I have been consulting a lot with a psychologist because the situation has reached the point where I have completely lost the joy of being on the pitch.”

The German tennis player was left behind with one break opportunity in both sets when facing Knutson, but still managed to win. Even though he admitted that he felt very nervous when facing opponents, he also expressed his desire to instill a positive attitude in himself.

“This time was really special because it was one of those matches where the final score doesn’t matter. I mean, I was really nervous in the first set and really nervous in the second. But, the key for me is to still love myself and be more lenient with myself,” added Lys.

When she faces the 2026 French Open champion, Mirra Andreeva in the second round of the US Open, Lys will try to achieve her first consecutive win in the 2026 season.
