Tennis News: US Open fans got a rare opportunity to watch Iga Swiatek compete in a more intimate setting and she returned their support with an undeniably dominant performance.
In their first meeting since the semifinals of the French Open six seasons ago, the world number 8 quickly defeated Argentinian Nadia Podoroska 6-3, 6-2 in the second round which lasted a little more than 1 hour.
The Polish tennis player appeared very efficient on his serve, after he landed 78 percent of his first serves and won 78 percent of the points from those serves. He never once lost a game while holding serve.
Podoroska’s only real threat came towards the end of the first set. After successfully holding his serve to reduce the deficit to 5-3, he had three opportunities to break his opponent’s serve. The eighth seed responded with two serves that her opponent couldn’t return before forcing the score to deuce. After two additional deuces, the eighth seed finally secured her second set point opportunity when the Argentine tennis player’s forehand fell slightly outside the court line.
The second set was not characterized by similar drama. Swiatek shot to a 5-1 lead and won the match with a beautiful backhand cross that Podoroska couldn’t reach.
Even though the final score was lopsided, the Argentine tennis player performed quite neatly by recording 11 winners and only making 12 unforced errors. The ratio of former world number 1 tennis players is only slightly better, namely 14 winners to 13 unforced errors. However, the Polish national’s superiority in terms of serving, returning the ball and playing in front of the net meant that he continued to lead comfortably throughout the match.
Now, the eighth seed has advanced to the third round of the US Open and will face the 25th seed, Marie Bouzkova, who beat British tennis player Harriet Dart 6-2, 6-2.
Swiatek has won all three of her previous meetings against Czech Bouzkova, including claiming a straight-sets win at the Australian Open earlier this season. The 25th seed has never taken a set against the eighth seed.
The winner of this match has the opportunity to meet the 2025 Australian Open champion, Madison Keys or the 2024 Olympic gold medalist in Paris, Zheng Qinwen, in the fourth round of the US Open.
The 22nd seed, Keys, had to do her best to beat Hungarian tennis player Anna Bondar with 5-7, 6-4, 7-6, while the former world number 4 tennis player who this season had to go through qualifying rounds to take part in the US Open, Zheng knocked out Kazakhstan national Yulia Putintseva with 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
