Malaysia’s leading badminton players largely maintained their positions in the latest world rankings despite mixed fortunes at last week’s BWF World Championships in New Delhi.
Men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia / Soh Wooi Yik remain ranked 4th in the world after narrowly missing out on their second world title, while Pearly Tan / M Thinaah remain ranked 5th despite failing to defend their women’s doubles silver medal.
Aaron-Wooi Yik, who reunited for the championships amid Malaysia’s ongoing men’s doubles overhaul, emerged as the country’s best player after reaching the final before losing to China’s Wang Chang-Liang Weikeng.
Goh Sze Fei / Nur Izzuddin also retained their No. 6 after reaching the quarterfinals, while Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King remain ranked No. 11 and No. 19 each after being eliminated in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, Pearly-Thinaah suffered a much earlier defeat compared to their runner-up finish at last year’s World Championships, but remained in fifth place after crashing out in the round of 16.
Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee, who reached the second round on her World Championship debut, remained in 23rd place.
The World Championships offer a valuable opportunity for players to strengthen their position in exchange for the premium rankings on offer, but little ranking improvement has occurred among Malaysian badminton players.
Only men’s singles player Justin Hoh and mixed doubles pair Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien managed to climb the rankings among the Malaysian athletes competing in New Delhi.
Justin rose one place from 46th to 45th despite suffering a loss in the first round.
Tien Ci-Chiew Sien made the biggest jump, climbing three places from 43rd to 40th after their campaign also ended in the first round.
There was no movement for another single Malaysian representative.
Leong Jun Hao remains ranked 27th after reaching the second round, while women’s singles players K. Letshanaa and Wong Ling Ching remain ranked 31st and 36th respectively after also qualifying for the second round.
In the mixed doubles event, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai remained in 11th place after reaching the round of 16.
Defending world champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, who are ranked 7th, failed to defend their title in New Delhi after Ee Wei was ruled out due to injury.
The men’s doubles rankings could also be a tentative indicator of Malaysia’s established partnerships, as the national team continues to experiment with new combinations.
In the China Masters tournament next week, Aaron will partner Wei Chong, while Wooi Yik will partner Aaron Tai.
Kai Wun-Roy King, who recently won the Korea Masters, will continue their duet, as will Arif-Kang Khai Xing.
