Men’s doubles head coach Herry IP has warned the rest of the national squad not to get too complacent, as further changes are also possible.
Although the focus is currently on elite pairs, which are being tested with various partners to find the best combination for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Herry IP also wants young players to improve their level.
He wants them to show they are capable of growing beyond the International Challenge and International Series tournaments and competing regularly at higher level events.
“There are plans (to reshuffle) because even though the results are good, if their level remains the same, it will remain the same even if they play in the Super 100 tournament,” said Herry.
“I always pay attention to their individual performances, but we want them to move up to higher level tournaments.
“We have to see if they are ready to play in Super 300, 500, 750 or 1000 tournaments. All these things I look at.”
“Even if you are a champion at Super 100 level, if you have not reached the standard required to compete at a higher level, it will be difficult.”
Herry IP, who has just returned from New Delhi after the World Championships, will also be waiting for reports on the performance of the national players competing at the Malaysia Selangor (Sukma) Games.
The Indonesian coach said that national players representing their respective states should not be inferior to players outside the national team, especially when they benefit from training at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara.
“I will definitely wait for the report and, as usual, we will carry out an autopsy,” said Herry IP.
“National team players should not lose to players outside the national team. If they lose to other national team players, I can still accept it.”
“You can see all these things from their daily training. If a player is in the national team but is lazy in training and not focused, then the results will not be good.”
The badminton competition in Selangor Sukma ended on Monday, with Bryan Federal Territory pair Jeremy Goonting-Low Han Chen winning the men’s doubles gold medal after defeating teammates from the same state, Damien Ling-Ethan Oh, in the final.
The Johor pair, Toh E Hern-Wee Yee Tern, won the bronze medal after defeating the Sarawak pair, Darrent Lim-Isyraf Hafizin Ibrahim.
