The Los Angeles Lakers’ chance to bring home Klay Thompson stopped midway. Instead of returning to the city that was once home to his father, Klay chose to join the Miami Heat. Mychal Thompson, the father, revealed the reason why his son rejected the offer from the Lakers for the second time.
Previously, Klay and the Dallas Mavericks agreed to a buyout worth 9.8 million US dollars. This deal opens up the opportunity for him to determine his next move, with the Lakers one tempting option.
Mychal Thompson, who made history with the Lakers with two championships, expressed his longing to see Klay in the Purple and Gold uniform. “I hope Klay becomes a Lakers player. For the last three years, I think the Lakers are the right choice for him, especially when he became a free agent a few years ago,” he told Locket on Heat.
In the summer of 2024, Mychal’s wish almost comes true. Klay left the Golden State Warriors after 13 years and four championships, then moved to the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year contract worth US$50 million via a sign and trade scheme involving six teams.
At the Mavericks, Klay is expected to shine alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, providing the team with much-needed three-point shooting ability. However, his first season in Dallas was far from expectations, the Mavericks even traded Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis.
The Mavericks’ condition continued to worsen, failing to qualify for the playoffs two seasons in a row. This situation made Klay start to question his future in Dallas. Mychal again tries to convince Klay to return to Los Angeles. However, the appeal of the Miami Heat is too strong. After acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo in a big trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Heat are a strong contender in the Eastern Conference with the combination of Giannis and Bam Adebayo.
“When I found out Klay was leaving Dallas, I tried to persuade him to come back to LA, to come home. But playing with Giannis and Bam and being under the tutelage of Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra was too tempting to resist,” said Mychal, former No. 1 NBA Draft 1978.
Now, entering the 14th year of his NBA career, Klay hopes to revive his magic on the court and chase a fifth championship with the Heat. With a solid team formation, this possibility does not seem like just a dream. (rag)
