Chen Tang Jie knows that change is part and parcel of a player’s career, and the mixed doubles player is ready to adapt once again with new coach Teo Kok Siang who will join next Tuesday.
As one of the senior players in the mixed doubles squad, Chen Tang Jie believes that the players must be ready to adapt quickly to any changes in the coaching set-up.
The squad recently lost Nova Widianto, who played a key role in guiding Tang Jie and partner Toh Ee Wei to the world title last year, after the Indonesian athlete returned home due to family matters.
Chen Tang Jie also had to face the fact that Ee Wei had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury a few weeks earlier, which ruled them both out of the World Championships in New Delhi.
Despite the changes, Tang Jie said that he must remain professional and give full cooperation to Kok Siang when the latter takes over.
“For good players, they should adapt to the coach, not the coach who has to adapt to the players,” he said.
“No coach comes in wanting their players to be worse. They always want to help players achieve more.”
“So whoever our coach is, I will try my best to work together with him so that we can become a better combination,” said Tang Jie.
Tang Jie will partner Cheng Su Yin at the China Masters next week, where they will face fifth seeds Guo Xinwa-Chen Fanghui in the first round.
Although their partnership looks promising in practice, Tang Jie admits it’s hard to know how they’ll perform until they take to the field in competition.
“No matter how good the training is, we still have to see how we perform in the tournament because there is a lot of uncertainty,” he said.
