Tennis News: On her 25th birthday, last season’s US Open runner-up, Amanda Anisimova, was very satisfied with her performance in the first round of the 2026 edition.
With a 6-1, 6-3 victory over compatriot Ashlyn Krueger, the tenth seed celebrated her 25th anniversary by hitting 25 winners in the 72-minute first round of the US Open. In line with the theme of the number 25, this victory improved the tenth seed’s record to 25-22 when facing her compatriot in the WTA tournament.
Throughout the match, Krueger was able to create 11 break point opportunities, but the tenth seed’s serve proved convincing after he was able to save ten of them, while he himself was able to capitalize on five of the nine break point opportunities he created.
“I think everyone is nervous about the first round of a Grand Slam because you are trying to find your game and maybe look for rhythm, because the first round doesn’t always provide the best quality of play,” admitted Anisimova.
“There are players who try to find their best form and only find it in the later stages of the tournament, but I think it really depends on each player. I felt very good going into this match. I felt like I played well, so I’m happy with that.”
Thanks to this victory, the 2025 Wimbledon season runner-up went 2-0 up in the head to head against Krueger after he won their first meeting in San Jose four seasons ago.
Apart from that, the 25-year-old is now 19-8 in the first round of Grand Slams and he has not lost in the first round of a Grand Slam since the 2024 US Open season.
Awaiting Anisimova in the second round was Swiss tennis player Lilli Tagger who eliminated German tennis player Tamara Korpatsch with 6-0, 7-6.
In other action, the 28th seed, Sara Bejlek, did not have such luck after she had to admit the superiority of the Spaniard, Cristina Bucsa, who won their meeting 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. In the second round, she will meet Japanese tennis player Himeno Sakatsume who beat Ukrainian tennis player Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Mananchaya Sawangkaew will be the opponent of the 31st seed, Leylah Annie Fernandez in the second round after the Thai national beat the Hungarian national, Panna Udvardy, 6-4, 6-3.
Maya Joint also advanced to the second round of the US Open after the Australian tennis player recorded a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Liudmila Samsonova, so she will next face the ninth seed, Elina Svitolina.
