Tennis News: Home tennis player, Taylor Fritz is in dangerous mode when playing the second round of the 2026 US Open season, after he only lost two games.
The world number 10 appeared merciless when destroying Italian tennis player Mattia Bellucci with 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 in the second round of the US Open which lasted 98 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“I entered the field with a really positive feeling,” exclaimed Fritz. “I felt very confident with the way I played. Throughout the match, I didn’t feel much tension. I just played aggressively and played really well. It felt just great.”
The ninth seed did not drop a single game in the first set and continued to play with determination as the match progressed. He converted eight of the 15 break point opportunities he created and saved all three break point opportunities he faced to record 2-0 in head to head against left-hander Bellucci.
Thanks to this victory, the 28-year-old is now the fourth male tennis player to score 200 wins in hard-court tournaments in the last decade after Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev.
Fritz, who will try to become the first home player to win a Grand Slam title since Andy Roddick in the 2023 season, is now 33-15 this season and 19-5 on American soil. Aiming to go further than his achievement in the 2024 season by finishing runner up in New York, he will face Argentine tennis player Francisco Cerundolo in the third round.
Meanwhile, the 24th seed, Cerundolo, fought all the way to defeat German tennis player, Jan Lennard Struff, 5-7, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round which lasted 3 hours 54 minutes.
In the same draw, fifth seed Flavio Cobolli overcame a slow start in New York before he saw off Australian Tristan Schoolkate 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
In his opening match, Cobolli had to fight extra hard after losing the first two sets and it looked like he would have another tough match against Schoolkate. But after losing the first set, the Italian tennis player raised the level of play and took control of the match before finally winning in 2 hours 42 minutes.
The next test for Cobolli, who has also qualified for the third round of the 2024 and 2025 US Open seasons, is a third round match against Belgian tennis player Alexander Blockx after the 21 year old defeated Argentinian Marco Trungelliti 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
